    Comments for Camp Fleischmann

Super Camp, Great staff, beautiful lake, I loved the programs. I can't wait for my next chance to go. Blue Lake is a beautiful, warm alpine lake 1/4 mile across. Waterfront activities include the standards plus Small Boat Sailing and 1-mile swim. Overnight experiences include remote meadows or a saddle on the shoulder of Mt. Harkness. The adventure hike up Mt Harkness is challenging because there is no trail! When our Scouts went up there two years ago they had a snowball fight in the snow bowl at the summit (in July!).

Visit www.scouter.org for the Official Nevada Area Council website information on Camp Fleischmann. Camp Fleischmann is celebrating its 50th season of adventure. Truly Scouting's paradise in the West. Nice cool morning's with the daily temps only reaching the mid 80's. Come join us. Best airport to fly into is Reno/Tahoe.

NOT a merit badge mill! My Troop goes back to our Council Camp every two years, and we are always impressed. Reserve Eagles Nest for BEST vantage point to all activities.

This place is an ok scout camp. It is dusty with a dirty lake, and bad food.

The food at Camp Fleischmann if much better with a fresh fruit and salad bar at every meal. Fresh baked bread daily, and a lot of home cooking.

We just returned from Camp Fleischman. I was very impressed by the united staff. We did feel that out of area or new troops were at a disadvantage regarding information.

The food was good and abundent. A cold cereal and fruit bar as well as oatmeal was available every day for breakfast. At lunch a salad bar and soup of the day was offered as well as the planned hot meal. Salad bar and fruit was again offered at dinner. The food service was very accommodating to the campers with food related issues (allergies, gluten intolerance, religious constraints).

Be forewarned you will need to bring your own tents and that from most campsites it is a long walk to the showerhouse. Dusty, but that is a standard problem for Sierra camps.

In their leader's guide the merit badges are marked as to location that they are offered and those that will be "partial" are denoted.

A wide range of leader activities are also offered. Have you been to a camp where the commissioner's staff deliever the newspaper and coffee to you camp site in the morning?

Camp Fleischmann is a wonderful camp for all scouters. The staff is very united and is very knowledgeable. They have a program over at "The Ridge" where scouts can take a step back in time to the mountain man era, there they can shoot black powder rifles, throw tomahawks, do metal work, and much more. Plus every Thursday their dance team puts on a Native American powwow.
Leaders also have many activities to do like the scout master belly flop, the scout master shoot, and a separate cinica run for the adults.
Don't expect to see any technology here. This a very rugged camp and is an awesome get away from normal life.

Our troop went to Fleischmann in 2008 and had an excellent time. There was a minor fire out by the black powder range one night. Staff coordinated a safe, orderly movement from the camping areas to the dining area for safety. I was very impressed with how this was handled. Calfire arrived with several trucks and we were back in our tents in no time. The next morning breakfast was served on time. Food was cafeteria style and palatable. Lots of scouts went back for seconds on all meals. The only downside is the fine alpine dust which gets into and on everything. Yes this camp is dirty/dusty but the lake is great. This year our troop chose to go to Camp Baker and I will update that camps blog for comparison. On a scale of 1-5, I give Fleischmann a 4.

I have only been to 2 scout camps so far ... Fleischmann last year and Wente this year. I was disappointed with Fleischmann and my experience at Wente this year has confirmed that Fleischmann is a substandard camp. I'm surprised by all the positive comments for Fleischmann and can only assume that these reviewers have not experienced a better camp such as Wente. I have two major complaints with Fleischmann. First, the food quality is only fair and the food service is terrible. Everyone eats at the same time and it's a mad, every man for himself, rush to the food. They ran out of the main entree on a couple of occasions before everyone had been served and it was just a noisy, chaotic mess. My second major complaint has to do with the merit badge program. Besides the incompetent instructors (that were barely older than the scouts) the program left WAY too much free time for the scouts. Give adolescent pre-teens 3 hours of free time and you're only asking for trouble. Fleischmann merit badge classes are scheduled such that each merit badge is completed in one day and the instructors almost always let the boys out early. In contrast, Camp Wente merit badge classes span 4 days and each class lasts 1 hour. It's more like a middle or high school schedule. At most, the boys would have 30 minutes of free time before the next merit badge class started. I do NOT recommend Fleischmann for these reasons and doubt that our troop would ever return.

Our Cubscout Pack went to Camp Flieschman this year. We had a great time. I have been to many camps(Lassen, Pahatsi, Pico Blanco, Winton, Royaneh) and can say that this years staff was the best I have ever seen. They went out of their way to make sure all our boys needs were taken care of. Thanks to all the staff at CF for a great experience.

Bad food. Ran out of food and drinks frequently. With one meal, all they had was water to drink. Parking is WAY too far away from camp sites. EXTREMELY dusty. I've never seen one dustier. Pit toilets only with lots of ants crawling all over. Shared showers only with inconvenient shower time schedules. Only ONE Webelos achievement activity. Paddle boat leaked really bad and actually sank on some campers in the middle of the lake. Very steep hikes to camp sites, especailly "Eagels Nest." Not enough activites scheduled so too much free time for the boys. Camp store the size of a broom closet with inconvenient hours. They were building a new climbing wall and cutting metal with a grinder or some tool, which was really loud, with sparks flying all over only a couple feet from where boys were trying to climb. Emergency response to boating emergencies is a joke. Boat could be on the other side of the lake and their idea of emergency response is a guy in a row boat - no jet ski or motor boat for rescue. It would take a guy ten or more minutes to get to someone in a row boat unless they were really close to the dock. No orientation for first timers. We'll never go to this camp again.

I will make no apologies for what I am about to say because it NEEDS to be said: I enjoyed Camp Flieschman as part of the Nevada council for several years in the seventies; I just turned 53 last 4th of July...

Potential Scouts-- if you are unfortunate enough to have to endure Scout Camp with a meodramatic ungrateful whiner like the person above I actually feel sorry for you. As a Scoutmaster that is something I would rarely or never do. The best part of scouting is that we thrive under challenging circumstances and we work together to improve our circumstance through teamwork and commitment while holding each other accountable to maintain a positive attitude--always. To the whiner above: get out of this endeavor you are making the A in BAD weaker through tour poor example.

Our Troop went to Fleischmann for 6 years on a row and I loved it. It has the best climbing program in California. Jim Pruss has been the climbing director for close to 40 years and really can teach. They have five great climbing walls which are unmatched anywhere in California. I really like the staff because they are older and come back year after year. Mark Hovermale Alameda Troop 2
