    Comments for Camp Winton

Winton is located on Bear River Reservvoir off Highway 88 above Jackson at an elevation of 4800'. It is accessible only by foot or by boat. Scouts hike in and the camp boat transports the troop gear. Units must provide their own tentage. Each unit has its own campsite and Scouts eat cafeteria style on picnic tables under the whispering pines along the beautiful waterfront. Aquatic activities are a specialty at Winton, with water-skiing, sailing, and motorboating among those of special iut~rest to scouts. For the high adventurers, overnight canoe treks are available. A first-year scout program, shooting sports, rock climbing, nature and round out the traditional program at Winton. The new C.O.P.E. course provides additional cha11enge to the scouts.

Out Scout Troop camped at Camp Winton this past summer and loved it. The lake is beautiful, facilities are nice, my son had a blast. The hike into camp is great with a view of the lake after about 10 minutes.

I have worked at Thunder Scout Reservation, La No Che (Winn Dixie Scout Reservation), Powhaten Blue Ridge Scout Reservation), Claytor Lake Aqutics Base, Salmen Scout Reservation (New Orlaeans Area Council) and Florida National High Adventure Sea Base. I can say that without a doubt this is the absolute best scouting camp program I have ever seen. You may have to bring your own tent but you will find plenty of scout spirit already here. Norman Rockwell couldn't have painted a more Idyllic scout camp. Tradition abounds and the staff is fixated on bringing a true scouting spirit to every scout and scouter. I was the aquatics director here in 1999 and if I didn't have to grow and get a real job I would have spent the rest of my summers driving there from my home in Florida. The camp is limited to a low number of campers each week by the National Forest it's located in. This camp always fills up every week and for good reason.

Our Troop has attended Winton for the last three years. Excellent merit badge program...plenty of options, written work and research required...bring paper and pencil! They guarantee that every scout will get the opportunity to take the class they want. Note that some badges are limited to scouts 14 years or older. Plenty of food, usually very good. Seconds offered. Spirit and professionalism of staff is the best I've seen anywhere. Most staff return every year...and they remember the scout leaders!(very impressive!) A step ahead of most councils...they offered the adult Paddle Craft Safety Training,a 12 hour course, last summer...very well run.

I served on Camp Winton's aquatics staff from 1966-1968, and as its Program Director in 1969, but I had to grow up and get a real job. Since then (the past 40 years), I have measured all Boy Scout camps I have attended (as a Scout Leader) by Camp Winton. Camp Winton is the best in my estimation.

My only concern about Camp Winton is it is on a steep hillside. The camp our troop was in was on "Cardiac Trail".
    Food was good.
    Staff was great!
