GTSR offers Scouts a fantastic summer adventure. A wilderness camp located seven miles north of Cisco Grove, California off of I-80 at an elevation of 6700', each unit has its own campsite. Scouts camp in tents, cooking their meals by patrols, or eating at our new dinning facility. The GTSR program includes opportunities for advancement for scouts seeking First Class, as well as challenges to those seeking high adventure. The Glacial Trek is a six-day, 50-mile trek through mountainous terrain, sparkling lakes and streams. Trout abound in the cold waters of the high mountain backcountry lakes, and the views are breath taking. GTSR also offers Mountain Biking Treks, Rock Climbing, Mountain man Program, and a unique Build Your Own Program week. Now prepare yourself for a self guided tour of Glacial Trails Scout Ranch Website.

It's a real shame to see this camp suffering as it is. I attended summer camp at GTSR in 1973. I also did my ordeal while there. It was my most memorable summer camp experience. The camp was phenomenal. I have always wanted to return. I hope the council can get it together and make the camp strong again.....A Scouter in Texas.

The camp has been closed for two years due to Golden Empire Council's inability to finance upgrades required by the county health dept and the forest service. The camp should be receiving these upgrades starting later this summer. An escrow fund of $260,000 has been set up to provide matching funds of up to this $ amount to provide the necessary improvements as well as others. The intent is to reopen in 2005 as a high adventure camp. It will probably be renamed Robert Cole Scout Camp in honor of the former GEC Scout Executive, whose family has established the matching funds account. It should be noted that part of these funds could also be used at one of the other GEC camps, excluding Camp Pollock. Once the camp reopens, the family has promised to provide up to half the maintenance costs each year for GTSR.

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why the camp closed. When you take a $220,000 budget and only allow about 30% of that to run the program, maintenance and staff, then pocket the rest for the council, camps close quickly. It is a testemant to the volunteers that it lasted as long as it did under the rule of Golden Empire Council.

Camp Cole is now being used by the White Stag Sierra Leadership Development Program for their summer camp July 5-11 in 2015. They have helped the Sacramento LDS Church to upgrade some portions of the camp. White Stag Sierra will host about 150 youth there in 2015. The Sacramento Stake of the LDS Church is also using the camp for their Boy Scout summer camp two weeks later in July. So it's getting some much needed care and upkeep.
