    Comments for Group Camping @ Vermont State Parks

    Six State Parks in Vermont have group camping areas that would be appropriate for Scout Units.

    Camp Plymouth: Located on the shores of Echo Lake in Plymouth, VT near the village of Ludlow, this group camping area consists of six lean-to’s, tent sites, fire rings, picnic tables, grills, water spigot and pit toilets on the south side of Buffalo Brook. Nicely secluded from the large day use area with big open fields ideal for group gathering and activities, you will feel like you have the whole park to yourself. On the north side of the brook, there is a large picnic area, play area, sandy beach, horseshoe pits, concession, and boat rentals. The group camping area can accommodate large groups of more than 100.

    Coolidge: Steeped in Civilian Conservation Corps history and located within the 21,500 acre Calvin Coolidge State Forest with its abundant trails and wildlife, the group camping area consists of an open area for tents, fire pit, grills, water spigot and pit toilets. Showers and flush toilet are a located a short drive away in the regular campground. The group area can accommodate approximately 20 campers and has parking for multiple vehicles. This area is removed from the regular campground and is in proximity to trailheads and the Bradley Hill Shelter. Because of the closeness to the shelter, groups are required to rent the shelter if camping Friday - Sunday. Your trip can include hiking, cold-water fishing, a visit to the nearby Calvin Coolidge Historic Site or swimming and boating at nearby Camp Plymouth.

    Kettle Pond: Secluded and undeveloped, Kettle Pond is completely surrounded by the 26,000 acre Groton State Forest. There are 26 lean-to's arranged into five separate groups with two composting toilets and two double pit toilets. Potable water is not available at this location but is available at nearby New Discovery State Park. There is a swimming area and miles of hiking and multiple use trails in Groton State Forest. Six remote campsites/lean-to's on the pond are also available.

    Shaftsbury: Located on Lake Shaftsbury, the group camping area has 15 lean-tos in 3 clusters of 5 lean-tos each with fire rings, water spigot and grills. There is a beautiful, large open area surrounded by trees that connects each of the lean-to clusters. The group camping area is on the opposite side of the day use area, providing a sense of seclusion for a great group camping experience. On the other side of the lake is a developed beach, play area, and picnic area. There is an open picnic shelter/pavilion available for large group gatherings. The snack bar concession has rental canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and pedal boats. The "Healing Springs Nature Trail" around the lake is also a popular hike. Maximum 120 campers.

    Underhill: Located at the base of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, the group camping area at Underhill makes the perfect base camp for the several trails which ascend the western flank of the mountain. There are tent sites and 7 lean-to’s, fire pits, grills and pit toilets that can accommodate up to 75 campers. The group camping area is located approximately .8 miles from the main parking area. You may drive your gear into the group camping area, but cars should be kept to a minimum and campers are expected to hike into camp. There is also a CCC era log picnic pavilion for group gatherings.

    Wilgus: Located on the banks of the Connecticut River, Wilgus State Park is the perfect stop on a multi-day river trip or as a base camp from which to fish or paddle on the river or to explore the trails of nearby Mt. Ascutney State Park. The group camping area contains a group of three lean-to’s, space for tents, fire pits with grills, nature observation platform and bathrooms with showers and hot running water. Maximum 50 campers.
