    Comments for Midland Railroad

    The Midland Railroad is an historical railroad in NE Kansas in Baldwin City. In the past, they have hosted Boy Scout Troops that are working on their Railroading Merit Badge. Troops can come on selected weekends and complete their Merit Badge requirements while working on the railroad. For their overnight stay, Scouts can either sleep in boxcars converted into sleeping quarters or camp in an area just across the tracks from the boxcars. This activity is only offered a few times a year and fill up fast. Interested Troops need to plan in advance, maybe as far as 12-18 months to get one of the slots.

    I have found out that planning in advance does not help as those running the Scout overnights usually do not decide their fall dates until about 4/5 months before. This is too late for our troop as we do our annual campout planning meeting in late September or October for the following year. For troops that do not plan so far out in advance, this could be an option.
