Comments for Lost Lake Scout Reservation (CLOSED)

    Summer resident camp program comments:
    1. Ability to pre-register for merit badge classes (adjustable at camp if necessary) a big plus -- boys know what badges they will earn, do pre-reqs.
    2. Merit badges are taught in block sessions. Block a: Mon+Tues am; Block b: Mon+Tues pm; Block c: Wed/Ths am; Block d: Wed/Ths pm with Fri am as make-up/finish-up makes classes more concentrated and boys spend less time traveling between classes.
    3. Bikes permitted in camp -- cuts down on drudge of having to walk everwhere.
    4. Two-shift dining hall
    5. Upto four merit badges per scout (see comment 2 above)
    6. Pathfinder program to teach tenderfoot, second, and first class skills)
    7. Family camp adjacent.
    8. A little of the early automotive/union history comes alive in a tour of the Harry Bennett loge over looking the waterfront. Don't know who Harry Bennett was, come to camp and find out.

Troop 254 out of Sterling Heights MI, just returned from summer camp on Saturday 2 August. We had 42 scouts and from 8-15 adults depending on the day of the week attend Clinton Valley Council's Lost Lake Scout Reservation (LLSR). LLSR is located about 3.5 hours North of Detroit in the central part of the state near Clare.

LLSR is on 2300 acres and was the private hunting preserve of Harry Bennet, who was Henry Ford's top henchman in the 1920's & 30's. It has a fascinating history including a main lodge made of cement that looks like logs, gun ports, moats, secret pasageways etc. Tours are given nearly
    every evening.

T-254 had 12 new scouts attend the Pathfinder program which included advancement classes for Tenderfoot through 1st class. Another dozen or so scouts attended the Baden-Powell program which was geared around finishing off 2nd and first class requirements. B-P attendees went to merit
badge classes and then fit in advancment requirements where necessary. Nearly all scouts who went to camp as Tenderfoots, will advance to 2nd class as a result of summer camp. Many have completed 1st class requirments as well. Most of the Pathfinders finished at least Tenderfoot requirments with some very close to second class.

Lost Lake has a lake (duh!) and a good aquatics program. In fact the Pathfinders who passed the swimmer test at the begining of the week went on to get a swimming merit badge, in all cases it was there first! They were very excited. In addition to the boating, sailing, snorkling, canoeing, mile swim, etc, LLSR also has a water carnival on the last afternoon of the week. Other scouts enjoyed the many merit badges classes offered including shooting (.22 & shotgun) archery, and a host of others.

LLSR offers a number of other programs including a high/low C.O.P.E course, a new climbing/repelling tower, river canoe trips, and other high adventure programs such a Wowatum. Wowatum is a 5 day backcountry trek which includes stops at theme camps. Camps include a mountain man camp (muzzle loading, and tomahawk throwing), lumberjack camp (pole climbing), 49er camp (panning for gold etc.) and others. The camps are only a couple miles apart so one spends more time doing and less time walking.

In addition, our Pathfinders spent the night in the 4 resident Tipis, and about 20 of us spent another night in the 8 tree houses which are in the high adventure camp.

We had a great time, and yes, 42 scouts were a handfull. We have about 51 scouts in our troop overall. About half our troop is first and second year scouts and this was their (and my) first summer camp (We went on a road trip last summer). The food was great, the staff helpful and friendly (though in short supply because of the Jamoboree). Overall I would rate it an A, of course I got a chance to do both the COPE course (oh, my bruised and battered body) and the climbing and repelling tower (man, what a rush!).

PS. We met a troop from Pennsylvania (32 scouts) who said it was the biggest camp they'd ever been to, and had the greatest variety of programs. They said they go out of council every other year.

After the statewide consolidation of all councils this camp property was determined to be underused and, while still owned by the Michigan Crossroads Council, is closed for all scout activities until further notice. See the PDF report for details.
